The game is an action-adventure puzzle game in which players must navigate through post-apocalyptic environments and solve physical puzzles. Players use a "portal gun" to open transportation gateways, and throughout the game they must avoid hazards such as stationary gun turrets, toxic substances, poisonous gas, giant pistons - some sequences are accompanied by realistic gunfire.
